The Crisis and the Call

People are looking for belonging that costs something, meaning that holds weight, and community that shows up when things fall apart. They want to be part of something sacred and they want that sacred thing to matter in the streets.

The crisis is not that people have lost faith. The crisis is that the institutions entrusted with faith have, in too many cases, lost their people. Churches emptied not because the hunger disappeared but because the practice stopped matching the proclamation. Movements burned out not because the cause faded but because the spirit sustaining them was treated as optional.

The binary between movement and church is collapsing because it was always false.

Why “Church”

The word carries weight. For many, it carries wounds. The pushback is real and comes from people who have been hurt by religious institutions, excluded by theology weaponized against them, or simply formed in secular spaces where “church” signals a world they don’t belong to.

But the etymology tells a different story. The Greek ekklesia literally means “an assembly” or “those called out.” Not a building. Not a denomination. Not a set of doctrines to which you assent before you are welcome. An assembly of people who have been called out of the ordinary order of things to practice something different together.

It is not Black Church aesthetics that make Black Church. It is the why. A shared origin story of a people who learned that God is known through collective struggle, through liberation, through the refusal to accept that the way things are is the way things must be. That origin story is not a gate. It is a door.

Our Theology

Orthopraxy Over Orthodoxy

We define ourselves by practice, not by doctrinal assent. What we do reveals what we actually trust, hope in, and commit to, especially under pressure. Behaviors are how beliefs tell the truth about themselves.

And the inverse is equally true: if you are already practicing this, you are already this. The ekklesia recognizes people who are already living these practices.

Practice precedes belief. That is not a theological compromise. It is what we have witnessed: people who experience sanctuary, dignity, accountability, and collective power begin to believe.

The Early Church as Blueprint

Before Christianity became an empire, it was a resistance movement. The earliest assemblies in Acts were economic communes. They held all things in common. This was noncooperation with empire through the construction of a living alternative — a community where everyone had enough, not out of guilt, but out of covenant. The alternative to empire was contagious.

Many Doors, One House

All you need to be here is faith in our people and belief in beloved community. We welcome people who come to spirit work through different doors — through prayer and through protest, through scripture and through song, through naming God and through practicing what God requires without using the word.

We do not require theological uniformity. We require practiced solidarity. Movement as ministry. Ministry as movement. These are not two things borrowing from each other. They are one thing that has been falsely separated, and this assembly exists to put them back together.
